Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Energy Section, Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering - LHTEE. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been established in 1923 and is today the largest single public university in Greece , with over 73000 students and over 4000 faculty members (including 2200 teaching staff). LHTEE, founded in 1990, has a long record of research and consulting activities, both at national and international level. More than 90% of its research funds originate from competitive programs of the EU. LHTEE's primary research work is in the areas of:

 Energy Systems: (a) Description, analysis and evaluation of energy technologies. (b) Rational use of energy in the industrial and domestic sectors. (c) Use of solid waste and biomass for energy production. (d) Development of Renewable Energy System. (e) LCA applications for energy systems. (f) Analysis and implementation of alternative financing schemes in the energy sector.

 Environmental Engineering: (a) Simulation of transport and chemical transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere with the use of advanced air quality models. (b) Assessment of various measures for reducing air pollution levels. (c) Analysis of the impact of industrial activities and major public works on air quality. (d) Integrated management, treatment and recycling of solid wastes. (e) Development and application of environmental management systems (ISO 14000 series, EMAS, LCA). (f) Integrated environmental assessment in urban areas with the use of informatics technologies. (g) Multimedia application in Environmental Impact Assessment studies.


LHTEE is currently undergoing a ISO 9001 certification.


AUT is actively participating in various national waste management related fora and networks, including the Aristotle University's Environmental Council and the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association. Its international projects and collaborations extend also beyond Europe and include North America and South East Asia.
